At 93 years old, Thomas Batho has lived a full life, from growing up in Ayr and Townsville during World War II, to moving to Brisbane almost 30 years ago. But in recent years, Thomas faced a series of health challenges that left him feeling isolated and vulnerable.
"When I turned 89, they cancelled my licence," Thomas shared.
"Then, around two years ago, I got the flu and COVID. I spent months in hospital. I’m still slowly recovering from those episodes which really knocked me around physically."
Around this time, Thomas began receiving support through Life Without Barriers’ Aged Care services.
"I just started with Life Without Barriers when I went into hospital. I got messages from people saying they were thinking of me, that was a big help."
"I’m very grateful that Life Without Barriers rescued me," he said.
"They changed my life, and it’s been fantastic ever since."
Thomas receives regular support from a dedicated team through the Support at Home Program, including weekly visits from Michelle, a Home and Community Assistant who helps with shopping, transport to medical appointments, and companionship.
"Michelle takes me shopping every week," Thomas shared.
"I recently had to get a tooth removed. She picked me up, waited with me, and even did my shopping afterwards."
Alongside other practical support such as domestic assistance, meal delivery services, home maintenance, gardening, and allied health services, Thomas also attends Capalaba Day Centre for social support. Here he enjoys a laugh, a cuppa, and a competitive game of ping pong, bringing alive the competitive spirit he harnessed as a keen tennis and bowls player.

"I stir up the other oldies as much as I can," he laughed.
"Every day you’ve got to laugh, no matter what happens."
This consistent, personalised support has helped Thomas regain independence and confidence. Though accepting help was difficult at first, Thomas now embraces the support.
"I found it awkward at first to accept help. I’d never had people help me before. It felt strange, but they’ve been fantastic," he says, speaking about his Life Without Barriers support.
"They made my life more bearable."
Thomas has also found joy in reconnecting with others and sharing his wisdom.
"Life is made up of moments," Thomas said.
"You live them once and they’re gone. Those moments become memories. So make every moment a happy moment."

Aged Care Services FAQ's
Where does Life Without Barriers provide Aged Care services?
Right across Australia! From big cities to smaller towns.
What Aged Care support does Life Without Barriers provide?
The aged care system can be a bit tricky to navigate, but we’re here to help you every step of the way. Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been approved to receive government-funded aged care services and looking for a provider, we can help.
Am I eligible for Aged Care services?
To be eligible for government-funded aged care services you need to be 65 years or older (50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people). Other eligibility factors are based on your health, how you’re managing at home, and any support you currently receive. These areas are explored in your assessment.
Will I receive care straight away?
You may not receive care straight away, as you may be put on a waiting list with My Aged Care. The length you’ll wait for care will depend on the funding you are approved for. Once you’re assessed and approved, My Aged Care will keep you updated on availability.
What do I need to pay?
What you need to pay varies from person to person. For some aged care services, you may need to complete an income or means (income and assets) assessment. For others, you will need to pay a contribution for each service.
Can I switch to Life Without Barriers from another service provider?
Absolutely! Our team are here to listen to your needs and discuss how we can support you or your loved ones to access help at home that meets your individual needs. Find out how to switch to Life Without Barriers.
