Life Without Barriers is proud to support intersex communities across Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand by affirming the Darlington Statement.

In affirming the Darlington Statement, Life Without Barriers proudly acknowledges the diversity of intersex communities across Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Our Executive Team and Practice Governance Board Committee endorsed the recommendation of support from our LGBTQIA+ employee network, Pride Without Barriers.

The Darlington Statement was developed by intersex organisations and advocates in 2017 and articulates the human rights demands of people with intersex variations in Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Intersex people have innate sex characteristics that don’t fit medical and social norms for female or male bodies, and that create risks or experiences of stigma, discrimination, and harm.

Commenting on the announcement, Diversity and Inclusion Lead Ashleigh Sternes said,

“At Life Without Barriers, we use the 'I' in LGBTQIA+ for a reason."

"Our Pride Without Barriers Committee made this decision to show our intentional support for intersex people. We know inclusion for intersex people goes beyond this simple action. We continue to build on our commitment to equal opportunity for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community, including people with intersex variations.”

In supporting the Darlington Statement, we uphold our Strategy 2025 pillars of influencing the systemic barriers intersex people face and impacting future generations by supporting the human rights of intersex people.
