"It is important for someone like me with a lived experience to be at events like this because I can share my story with other children and young people." Jasmin, a National Youth Advisory Group member.

Life Without Barriers continues to champion youth participation and collaboration across the care sector, recently joining CREATE Foundation’s Hobart Halloween Connection Event with a fun and lively trick-or-treat stall.

Held at Woody’s Skate and Play, the event brought together children and young people with experiences of living in care, carers, and professionals for an afternoon filled with creativity, connection, and storytelling. It was a vibrant reminder of how shared experiences can build stronger relationships between young people and those who support them.

Life Without Barriers and the CREATE Foundation have a strong relationship built on a shared commitment to amplifying youth voices and strengthen connections across the care sector. Events like the Halloween Connection are an important way to bring that relationship to life with space for meaningful conversations, shared stories, and genuine connection.

The Life Without Barriers team who attended the event brought plenty of enthusiasm, creativity, and a genuine commitment to connecting with young people and carers. Their involvement was more than just showing up, it is their dedication to listening, learning, and leading with lived experience.

"The reason why it is important for someone like me with a lived experience to be at events like this is because I can share my story with other children and young people who may not feel confident enough to talk about their own experiences in care," said Jasmin.

"By having this opportunity, it can help others realise they’re not alone, there are other children and young people out there who understand."

Throughout the day, Jasmin spoke with children and young people, helping them feel comfortable and confident to share their thoughts. Her approach reflected Life Without Barriers’ belief that youth voices should not just be heard, it should be part of every decision that shapes care.

"In my role as a National Youth Advisory Group member, I can help other children and young people to advocate for themselves or others and make them feel confident in themselves," she said.

"It’s about making the care system a better place, for those entering it, and for those transitioning out."

She added how valuable it is to create opportunities for young people to speak up and be part of positive change which affects them.

"Collaborative events like this allow us to meet children and young people, listen to their voices, and make the system better for everyone."

"I believe regular catchups and connection events give young people a better chance to advocate for themselves and others."

CREATE Foundation’s Tasmanian Program Facilitator, Madeleine Summers Stuart, also shared her thanks.

"I just wanted to say a big thank you from all of us at the CREATE TAS team, for joining our Halloween Party and hosting a great stall! We really appreciate the time, energy, and enthusiasm you all brought to the event," said Madeleine.

"We’ve had great feedback from young people and families who love the stalls, and the connection and collaboration the Halloween party brings each year. Thanks again for being part of it, and we look forward to working together in the future!"

The Hobart Halloween Connection Event was more than a community celebration, it was a shared commitment to ensuring every young person feels seen, valued, and supported to thrive.

For Life Without Barriers, moments like this demonstrate what can be achieved when collaboration and compassion come together. Each conversation and connection builds confidence and belonging for young people and families in care.
