Meredith and John, two individuals supported by Life Without Barriers Aged Care services, explore their creative side.
At Life Without Barriers, our Aged Care services are here to support you to do the things you enjoy, just like Meredith and John, who both find joy in spending time on their artistic pursuits.
Creativity is a constant throughout life, adapting and evolving as we progress. It can take many forms, whether through the arts, literature, or other expressions, and remains a powerful means of personal fulfilment and connection.
As we grow older, creativity continues to offer new avenues for exploration, reflection, and impact, demonstrating that it is not confined to a particular stage of life but rather is an ongoing process that can enrich both the individual and those around them.
Read on to discover the wonderfully creative stories of Meredith and John, and how they continue to embrace their passions with the support of our Aged Care team.
John’s book from the heart uplifts others
John Ehm is an author and generously donated copies of his memoir, Matters of the Heart, to the Life Without Barriers office in Cairns.
"In my working life, I was a builder, but now in my golden years, I have taken to writing books about my earlier life," said John.
John’s book, which details his personal journey through heart surgery, offers hope and inspiration.
"Matters of the Heart is my first 'heart' book, which was prompted by my open heart trauma surgery in 2003 to receive a bovine aortic valve for my failing human heart one, which had beat continuously for nearly 71 years without any problems," said John.
It is easy to read and relate to as it was written by a patient sharing his own heart journey, from early diagnosis to rehabilitation and the return to a healthy and active lifestyle.
"With photos, cartoons and helpful information, a person who is facing surgery can easily relate to the human feelings, even though in these intervening years the advances in medical treatments are far superior to that given to patients in the year 2003."
John hopes his donation will uplift and empower other individuals supported by Life Without Barriers by providing them with a message of resilience, strength and a clear message.
"Please, look after your own hearts. You have a lot of living to do yet, so enjoy it."

Meredith’s passion for pottery
Meredith's passion for the arts and pottery began years ago during a trip to Istanbul, where a deep admiration for the large pots she encountered inspired her to create her own masterpieces. She has since held her own exhibitions, starting in Mission Beach and later showcased her work in Adelaide, Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, and Cairns.

Throughout her pottery journey, Meredith has experimented with various techniques, with her favourite being 'Raku Firing'. Her pieces are a testament to her skill, dedication, and the time invested in each creation.
Though she retired from pottery making seven years ago, Meredith still joins her friends for kiln openings, eagerly awaiting the unveiling of new pieces. Meredith’s love for creativity and vibrant artwork is evident in her home, where her creations are proudly displayed.

John uses Life Without Barriers' Commonwealth Home Support Program to help him carry on living independently. Receiving help around the house, such as cleaning and gardening services, as well as support attending activities and appointments means John can keep his focus on writing, engagements promoting healthy living and his other interests.
Meredith receives Home Care Package services to help her with domestic tasks such as cleaning, personal care, as well as community access services to support Meredith to attend social outings and group activities to keep her connected to the local art community.

Am I eligible for Aged Care services?
To be eligible for government-funded aged care services you need to be 65 years or older (50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people).
