Indigenous Literacy Day, 3 September, is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ stories, cultures, and languages, produced by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
This year, Indigenous Literacy Day will be celebrating the theme, 'Strength in Our Stories. For Now, and Future Generations.'
Reading books from First Nations authors helps us all to understand Australia’s collective history and appreciate the cultural richness of stories from some of the most ancient and original storytellers. Indigenous Literacy Day is a chance to celebrate and share the diversity of First Nations languages and cultures with audiences across the country.
Are you up for the challenge?
In 2025, we’re introducing a team challenge to celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day and showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creators.
We challenge you and your team to complete as many of our tasks as you can:
Take an unidentified photo of someone reading a book by a First Nations creator outside.
Write a short story, only a paragraph or two, starting with "The kookaburra told me..."
In a team, choose a native Australian animal and write a short poem about the animal by writing one line at a time.
Design a poster for your favourite book by a First Nations author.
Read a book by a First Nations creator.
Read a dreamtime story to someone.

It’s easy to get involved!
There’s plenty of ways to get involved:
Get your team together, record your progress on the electronic challenge sheet, or download and print a copy for your team to complete.
Complete one or more of the fun challenges to show us how you’ve celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day 2025.
Share your teams’ achievements with us at hookintobooks@lwb.org.au to win a book pack for your office.
