Life Without Barriers will build innovative, modern and specifically-designed housing with people with disabilities in the Northern Territory after being awarded a land grant by the Northern Territory Government.
The Hon Kate Worden, NT Minister for Disabilities, announced that Life Without Barriers has received a land grant in order to build specialist disability accommodation (SDA) dwellings in Darwin’s northern suburbs. The fit for purpose homes are being designed to be culturally appropriate and reflect the individual needs of future residents with disability.
Life Without Barriers is an experienced provider of disability accommodation services in the Northern Territory and is making significant investments to invigorate living choices for people with disability. The new homes are an important step in providing more choice for people with disability in the region.
“We are excited to have been given this opportunity by the Territory Government to design and build two properties in partnership with Territorians with disability." Life Without Barriers Chief Executive Claire Robbs said.
“Access to a home that responds to a person’s accessibility requirements not only provides the basic benefits we all appreciate in a home, but can also improve quality of life, provide greater security in order to engage in employment opportunities and increase choices in how a person may wish to participate in their community.
“We believe Territorians with disability should have access to the same living choices as everyone else."
“Life Without Barriers is committed to invigorating the choices people with disability have in relation to where they choose to live and how they choose to live their lives," said Claire.
“This partnership with the Territory Government demonstrates our mutual commitment to recognising people with disability and how important it is that greater housing and life choices are made available for all members of our community.”
Construction on the new dwellings is set to begin later this year, with residents occupying the homes in 2023.
