On Tuesday 27 May, Life Without Barriers learned of the tragic death of a young Walpiri man who we provided support to in Alice Springs. First and foremost, we acknowledge the profound loss and grief for family, and his community, whom he loved so very much. We offer our ongoing support to them.
We acknowledge Kumanjayi White as a much loved son, brother, grandson, friend and a community member. As an organisation, we are deeply saddened by this tragedy and its impact on our people who supported and cared for him and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues.
While we respect there are community and formal processes underway which we will actively engage in, we acknowledge the broader context in which this tragedy occurred. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and families, this terrible loss is not an isolated event.
The call in reconciliation is to strengthen relationships with First Peoples, to appreciate and acknowledge self-determination is truly the path towards communities being able to heal and thrive. The rights people with disability have to be active and accepted in the communities in which they live is unequivocal
This terrible event deepens our commitment to ensuring the rights of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people with disability are fully realised and that our justice systems, which are intended to serve us all, are free of racism and ableism.
