National Reconciliation Week 2018

With this year’s theme of ‘Don’t Keep History A Mystery’, LWB celebrated National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) through many events across the country.

As a large organisation with social purpose at our heart, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to contribute to increasing opportunities and improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to appreciate and reflect on the immense role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history has in who we are as a nation and where we can go next.

In Brisbane on 25 May, LWB was a visible presence at West End's Orleigh Park where we teamed up with organisations including Micah and LinkUp to participate in sombre reflection of the Stolen Generations. The LWB stall featuring homemade scones, ensured that hot tea and coffee flowed all morning.

Dignitaries such as MP Terri Butler, Member for Griffith and many Elders from the immediate and surrounding regions, were on hand for the occasion, which included moving music from two local choirs.

In Darwin on Sunday 27 May, cultural activities and a cultural tour were arranged at Pudakul for our clients, supported by our staff. Pudakul is the language of the Macaranga Tree (freshwater hibiscus to make spears), and warmly welcomed LWB onto their traditional lands, sharing their cultural and traditional practices of the Limilngan-Wulna peoples. Clients and staff participated in spear throwing of the Pudakul, and were invited to share some tea and damper prepared by traditional custodians. All then embarked on a journey to ‘Windows on the Wetlands’, where members representing the Limilngan-Wulna peoples shared bush tucker stories and traditional Dreaming of their country.

The event was well received and shared practical experiences of cultural traditions that have continued for thousands of years.

LWB continues to work toward meeting the commitments we have set in our Reconciliation Action Plan. Since January 2016, we have exceeded our target with over 1,600 staff participating in face-to-face cultural awareness workshops to date. These workshops give us a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and achievements. Another commitment, is supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses through our procurement practices with more than $1 million spent in the last two years.
