Cultural Connection

Due to the impact of past "welfare" policies many Aboriginal children were disconnected from their families and communities resulting in the loss of their language and culture. This has had a devastating effect on Aboriginal people, families and communities. It is important that Aboriginal children who are placed in out of home care remain connected to their families, communities and culture.

We understand the significance of Aboriginal children and young people knowing, valuing and taking pride in their culture. Our Cultural Connections program promotes connections to family, land and culture to help Aboriginal children maintain a strong sense of who they are, and facilitate understanding of their family and community relationships.

This is achieved through the provision of specialist support by appropriately trained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people specifically relating to their cultural heritage and participation in the local Aboriginal community in which they live.
